History

Members of the Voluntary Aid Detachments (VAD) received some medical training but were not classed as qualified nurses and worked mainly as orderlies on hospital ships, troop trains and in Red Cross convalescent homes. In December 1942 the name changed to the Australian Army Medical Women's Service and all future enlistments to it were known as A.A.M.W.S.,
